    2019 State of The Black Tech Ecosystem

    After the release of the first report in 2017, Black Tech Mecca (BTM) has continued to lead the charge on compiling data that aims to fufill part of their mission to “paint a clearer picture of Black participation in local tech ecosystems.” On June 27, BTM founder, Fabian Elliott returned to Google for #CHISBTE19. The forum marks three years of research and focused on the 2019 theme Smart Black Tech Ecosystems: An In-Depth Analysis of Racial Equity in the Chicago Tech Sector.

    The Chicago Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers hosted a day-long event today for students ranging in age from 5 to 17. When we reached the speed networking session, I thought, “Well, I guess I’ll have to skip this part.” But the moderator insisted that another girl (who is a social worker) and I, stay to participate. I sat there thinking and hoping I would find that one kid in the room who would give me the standard, “My mom made me come” or say, “I don’t know
