On September 15, 2017, Fairfax Renaissance Development Corporation (FRDC) will honor Georgia Congressman, John Lewis at their 16th Annual Louis Stokes Community Visionary award event. The award was established in 1995 to honor then Congressman, Louis Stokes.
Lewis played an integral role in student led activism as the Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1964, Lewis and members of SNCC organized during the Mississippi Freedom Summer and led a peaceful protest of more than 600 people across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama on March 7, 2965. On that day, Lewis and marchers endured a brutal attack by Alabama state troopers that is now known as “Bloody Sunday.” The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed shortly thereafter.
